Maternal & Child Health Services – Prenatal to School Age
Public Health Nurses
With your consent, hospitals across Ontario in cooperation with Public Health agencies are screening every baby at birth for problems that might affect their growth and development.
Upon hospital release, parents will receive a phone call from a Public Health Nurse and a home visit will be offered.
Public Health Nurses can provide information on:
- Breastfeeding
- Healthy eating
- Growth and development
- Post partum care
- Child safety
- Community programs
- Parenting issues
- Sexual health
Public Health Nurses may offer some families an in-depth at home assessment with support from a Family Home Visitor
Family Home Visitors
Family Home Visitors are experienced parents who have special training in helping families meet the needs of their children.
Family Home Visitors can provide:
- Encouragement and support to families
- Translation & interpretation of information to families
Information/Resources:
- Prenatal
- Child development
- Parenting
- Child safety
- Healthy eating
- Community services
Public Health Dietitian
The Public Health Dietitian is the expert in food and nutrition.
Public Health Dietitians can provide information on:
- Feeding your baby
- Healthy eating while breastfeeding
- Picky eating
- Prenatal nutrition
- Weaning
- Starting solids
Health Promoter
The Health Promoter works with the community to plan,implement and evaluate activities that both support and promote health and well-being.
This is done by providing a variety of resources and activities including but not limited to:
- Child car seats
- Play time
- Safe sleep
- Safe environments
- Physical literacy

Referrals can be made by yourself, a healthcare provider,or other community agencies.
