The Haldimand Norfolk Preschool Speech and Language Program is funded through the Ministry of Child and Youth Services, and is one of 34 programs across the province of Ontario. Your tax dollars help us to provide:
- A range of interventions (home programming, monitoring, weekly individual or group sessions, parent training)
- Consultation to caregivers, early learning providers (including teachers)
We serve children and their families from birth to senior kindergarten entry. Children eligible for junior kindergarten must be referred before the end of June of the year they start JK.
For more information about our program and services, see our Communication Matters newsletter
As a child care provider, you are in a unique position to assist families in deciding whether to access our program using our communication checklist
If you would like to access hard copies of these resources, please contact our Speech Program secretary at 519 426-6170 ext. 3243.
The two most important questions you can ask a parent are:
- “Are you concerned about your child’s speech or language skills?” Research shows that when a parent is concerned, they are usually right. A referral is a good idea.
- “Does your 18-month old have 20 words?” If the answer is “no”, a referral is a good idea.
Parents can now make referrals online.
You are also uniquely positioned to assist children in achieving important developmental skills, including social and communication skills. Our team includes speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who are Hanen ® Certified, and can provide you with strategies to assist children in your program to interact and use language.
