Using Medications Wisely

Most people don’t realize that a major risk factor for falls is medications. Certain medications are linked directly to falls because they can cause sudden drops in blood pressure or poor balance. For example drugs such as sleeping pills, blood pressure medications, depression and anti-anxiety medications and medications to treat Parkinson’s disease all can cause problems with balance.

Taking four or more medications significantly increases the risk of side effects which directly increases the risk of falling. If you are taking more than four prescription or over the counter medications (including herbal remedies) be sure to speak to your pharmacist.
