Recognizes Public Health Inspectors

SIMCOE, ON, JAN. 2, 2008 – The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit is encouraging the public to phone and find out more about what Public Health Inspectors do for the residents of Haldimand and Norfolk counties.

“We are inviting people to phone in during National Environmental Public Health Week, which runs from Jan. 14 to 19,” said Healthy Environment Coordinator Glen Steen. “This is a week-long event, sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors, devoted to raising awareness of the many services provided by Public Health Inspectors in their communities.”

This year’s theme is The Changing Face of Environmental Health Inspection.

“Public Health Inspectors will continue to maintain the programs that form the foundation of public health while growing to meet the new challenges created by a constantly changing environment,” explained Public Health Inspector Cathy Lanni. “Some of the challenges Public Health Inspectors face are emerging diseases, climatic issues, emergency management and revised legislation. To remain as leaders in these fields, we must constantly advance our skills and knowledge.”

Public Health Inspectors provide a variety of services in such areas as food safety, drinking water quality, on-site sewage disposal systems, rental housing conditions, recreational water quality, air quality, tobacco reduction, childcare and institutional facilities conditions, disease outbreak management, injury prevention and land-use management.
