SIMCOE, ON, SEPT. 4, 2008 – New parents or those expecting or planning a child are being urged to attend the area’s first Prenatal Fair at the Simcoe Recreation Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

“This is the first Prenatal Fair ever held in our community,” said Judith Hayman, Public Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, which is organizing the event. “Businesses and local agencies will be setting up booths and providing a wealth of information on having and raising a baby. Merchandise, services and educational material will be displayed by a range of professionals, including chiropractors, naturopaths, pharmacists, nurses and photographers, to name just a few.”

The fair is free and runs for one evening only, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“A major goal is to get information into the hands of future parents as early in pregnancy as possible,” Hayman said. “There will be fun events as well as information and we’ll have a number of door prizes.”

The Health Unit is hosting a small cafe with free refreshments and the Norfolk La Leche League is organizing a pregnancy fashion show. Presentations will take place on car seat safety and breastfeeding.

“A very interesting display will feature a taste testing of commercial versus homemade baby food,” Hayman said. “Businesses and agencies are donating door prizes and we already have a grand prize of a high quality car seat.”

“Health Fairs have been used in many of the surrounding areas to provide pregnancy information to expectant parents,” Hayman noted. “In Middlesex-London almost every pregnant woman goes to a Prenatal Fair.”
