Free Prenatal Health Fair Wednesday
SIMCOE, ON, SEPT. 25, 2008 – About two dozen exhibits geared to pregnancy will be featured at the area’s first Prenatal Health Fair next Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Simcoe Recreation Centre.
New parents or those expecting or planning a child are being urged to attend the free event, which runs for one evening only from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The recreation centre is located at 182 South Dr. near Queen Street South.
“We’ve filled up all the exhibitors’ tables, so it’s going to be a full house,” said Judith Hayman, Public Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, which is organizing the event. “There will be piles of information for people who want the latest insights into having a baby. We’ve got doctors, nurses, pharmacists coming, as well as businesses and local agencies who supply baby products and services.”
The Health Unit is hosting a small cafe with free refreshments and the Norfolk La Leche League is organizing a pregnancy fashion show that will showcase clothing from businesses in Simcoe and Brantford.
Presentations will take place on car seat safety and breastfeeding, and there will be a taste-testing booth where you can compare commercial versus homemade baby food.
Several door prizes can be won, including a birthing ball, photography sitting fee, books, cloth diapers and a grand prize of a high-quality car seat.
In addition to the Health Unit displays, exhibits will include Armstrong Clinic, Clark’s Pharmasave, Doula-Suzanne Jackson, Doula-Terri Murphy, Family Chiropractic-Dr. Angela VanDeWalle, La Leche League, Memories in the Making, Norfolk Welcome Wagon, North Shore Health Association-Dr. Tom Sartor and Dr. Engell, Ontario Commissions Services, Queensway Therapy, Roulston’s Discount Drugs, Salvation Army, Spinabifida Association of Ontario, Studio One, Sun Life, Usborne Books and USC Education Savings Plan.
Although this is the area’s first Prenatal Fair, several Health Units in other parts of the province, such as Woodstock, Perth, Waterloo and London-Middlesex, hold similar events. To find out more about the local Prenatal Fair, contact the Health Unit at 519-426-6170 or 905-318-5367.
