Step Up to a Healthier You!

SIMCOE, October 29, 2014 – A series of FREE, engaging classes aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle to prevent or manage chronic diseases is being offered by the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.

“The ‘Step Up to a Healthier You’ program is designed to not only help participants understand the risk factors that can lead to stroke, heart disease and diabetes, but also how to manage their health and take practical steps to prevent or control these diseases.” states Agnes Zabinska, public health nurse with the HNHU.

The program runs over four, two hour, sessions focusing on various topics and skills adults can use to improve and manage their health. Classes begin Thursday, November 6th and will continue every Thursday for the rest of the month. Each class runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Arena Lounge at the Simcoe Recreation Centre at 182 South Drive in Simcoe.  To register, contact Dana Reynolds at Ext. 3265 at 519-426-6170 or 905-318-6623.

Various health and community professionals will lead the classes, including a registered dietitian, a nurse, and a pharmacist. A variety of interactive, hands-on lessons will be used to cover topics such as healthy eating, how to read and understand food labels, stress management, goal setting, as well as activities aimed at helping participants overcome barriers  to physical activity that they can use throughout their life.

“The lifestyle choices you make today can mean a difference between enjoying your retirement or spending your time in and out of hospitals,” notes Zabinska, “Invest in your health, join us for the workshops and listen and talk to the experts, most importantly, encourage your partner or friends to register with you.”

According to Zabinska the Step Up to a Healthier You program is also accessible online at www.stepuptoahealthieryou.ca for clients who might have risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and are looking to make lifestyle changes but don’t have the ability to join the workshops in person.

For more information about the program visit www.hnhu.org or contact Dana Reynolds at Ext. 3265 at either 519-426-6170 or 905-318-6623. Registration is open until November 3rd, 2014.
