Community invited to help plan ways to improve Haldimand and Norfolk

SIMCOE, OCTOBER 04, 2012 – Haldimand and Norfolk Counties are great places to live, but they could be even better.

That is the outlook of the Healthy Communities Partnership, a group of community leaders and volunteers who have been working together since 2009 to improve the quality of life for local citizens. The group has identified five results that would enhance the lives of residents of the two counties, and they are inviting community groups, organizations and residents from both counties to join them in Fisherville on November 2 and November 6 as they develop a plan to achieve these results.

“After speaking with a wide range of people and local organizations, we have determined that our residents want to live in a community that is safe, healthy, vibrant, connected, and one that develops strong and connected youth,” noted Heather Keam, Health Promoter at the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit and member of the Healthy Communities Partnership. “Now we are looking for input on the best ways to reach these desired results.”

The planning sessions will run from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m., and will be held at the Fisherville Community Centre, located at 18 Main Street West in Fisherville. A lunch will be provided to attendees while they work.

Seven topics were selected as factors that contribute to one or more of the identified end goals. The November 2 planning session will concentrate on healthy eating, poverty and education. The November 6 planning session will focus on physical activity, suicide, injury and crime. Participants are encouraged to attend both planning sessions or choose the day which most interests them.

“These sessions are a great opportunity for community stakeholders to come together and develop a plan to make Haldimand and Norfolk the best places to live” states Sheila Wilson, Haldimand County’s Manager of Community Development & Partnerships.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact Dana Reynolds at the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit at 905-318-6623 or 519-426-6170 ext. 3265, or email[email protected]and indicate which day you will be attending.
