Norfolk County Responds to New Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Gas Leak

Norfolk County, ON – September 29, 2017

Upon receipt of a Citizen concern to Norfolk County, staff from the Health Unit and Norfolk Fire and Rescue attended a County-owned woodlot located at 1925 Forestry Farm Road, northwest of the intersection of McDowall Road. It was determined that a former gas well (F006207) located within the forested area, was leaking small amounts of Hydrogen Sulphide gas (H2S).

Subsequent investigation and methodical air sampling was conducted.  Results indicated that trace amounts of H2S were observed at multiple locations, however readings were confined to a small area approximately 30 metres in diameter immediately adjacent to the well site.  Refer to Map 1 below.

H2S readings at the site were obtained along Big Creek which is roughly 10 metres below the adjacent roadway.  Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Lock is not immediately concerned about exposure to residences or the travelling public in the vicinity.

Sampling will continue over the next few days and staff, working closely with Provincial Ministry Officials, will meet early next week to discuss the most appropriate course of action.  The public is being requested to avoid the area as a precautionary measure.

Updates will be posted on norfolkcounty.ca under “Media Releases” and on the Norfolk County’s Emergency Information Site Facebook page.
