Naloxone Kits

The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit provides opioid overdose prevention kits containing naloxone. Naloxone is a medication given to temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. Some types of prescription and street opioids can include:

Codeine
Demerol
Hydromorphone
Heroin
Fentanyl
Methadone

A Harm Reduction team member will train current and past opioid users or concerned family and friends of a person at risk of overdose in recognizing signs of an opioid overdose and how to use naloxone. It is not harmful if given for other types of overdose (or if the person hasn’t overdosed), and the only time it would not be given is if the person is hypersensitive to the medication. A health card is not required.

Naloxone Kits — Injectable and Nasal Spray

	Injectable kits include: 1 hard case (for example, a zippered hard black case with red “naloxone” cross) 2 (0.4 mg/1 ml) vials or ampoules (a small glass container) of naloxone 2 safety-engineered syringes with 25g 1" needles attached 2 alcohol swabs 2 devices (known as “breakers,” “snappers,” or “openers”) for opening ampoules safely 1 one-way rescue breathing barrier 1 pair of non-latex gloves Naloxone Prescription Identifier Card 5 steps to respond to an opioid overdose resource

If your naloxone kit is lost, expired, stolen or used, a new kit can be requested. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides certain protections if you are present when emergency services are called.
