Trail walkers invited to explore St. Williams Conservation Reserve

SIMCOE, FEBRUARY 26th, 2018 – Norfolk Pathways for People would like to invite the public to a trail walk at the St. Williams Conservation Reserve on Sunday, March 4, 2018.

“This year we have partnered with the St. Williams Conservation Reserve Community Council (SWCRCC) for our winter walk,” said Gord Mason, chair of Norfolk Pathways for People. “We aim to introduce the public to the various trails across Norfolk County and bringing walkers to the Conservation Reserve helps that organization meet two of its goals.”

The St. Williams Conservation Reserve’s goals include:

Recreational opportunities – to provide day use recreational opportunities and permit traditional public land uses that are compatible with natural heritage protection and restoration.

Educational awareness – to raise awareness of the site’s significance, history, ecological processes, features, complexity, sensitivity, and beauty.

SWCRCC staff will offer a short talk about the Community Council and about ongoing work to restore the special habitats at the conservation reserve that support many rare and endangered plants and animals. Walkers will then take a guided tour along the Forest Capital trail.  “We hope local residents will take advantage of this opportunity to explore some of the trails and learn more about the past and future of the Conservation Reserve lands,” said Mike Postma, chair of SWCRCC.

Volunteers from the Port Rowan/South Walsingham Heritage Association will also be on hand at the Interpretive Centre, and walkers can warm up indoors after the walk and learn about the history of the lands now included in the Conservation Reserve.  If walkers are interested in supporting the work of either of these non-governmental organizations, donations would be gladly accepted.

Norfolk Pathways for People hosts two trail events each year to introduce the public to the extensive trail system the county is so proud of. The coalition’s mission is to promote pathways for walking and cycling in Norfolk County for health, recreation and active transportation.

The Interpretive Centre is located at 885 Hwy 24, just west of the Forestry Farm Road.  See you Sunday, March 4th at 2p.m. We will be walking snow or shine.
