Health Unit urges community to stay vigilant against spread of COVID-19
As COVID-19 cases rise locally and provincially, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit would like to remind residents to continue to remain vigilant against the spread of the virus by practicing public health guidance including:
- Stay home if you feel unwell
- Choose open, well-ventilated spaces over closed ones. Open a window if indoors
- Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze
“Currently, our areas of greatest concern are the Dunnville and Langton regions,” said Dr. Matt Strauss, Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit. “I am particularly concerned about the proportion of 40 to 60 year olds in our community who are not vaccinated. They are at high risk for hospitalization or death as case rates pick up.”
Members of this cohort are strongly urged to get vaccinated. The best way to avoid serious illness is to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Additionally, Dr. Strauss noted that early treatment for high-risk individuals with COVID-19 is now available through the St. Joseph’s Health Care monoclonal infusion clinic in Hamilton. “These treatments cut the death rate in half, if given within seven days of symptom onset,” he said. “You must get tested to qualify for the treatment. If you have symptoms, please get tested.”
