Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit prepares for respiratory season

With respiratory virus season underway, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit (HNHU) is working to protect community health by managing the spread of respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

This season, which typically spans November to April, is marked by a significant rise in respiratory viruses, posing increased risks, particularly to those with underlying health conditions, seniors, and immunocompromised individuals.

Protecting Against Respiratory Illnesses

To safeguard against respiratory illnesses, the HNHU recommends residents take the following precautions:

  • Get Vaccinated: Stay current with influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines if eligible. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent serious complications associated with these illnesses.
  • Practice Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your face to reduce the chance of infection.
  • Follow Respiratory Etiquette: Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or a tissue, and clean high-touch surfaces regularly.
  • Stay Home When Sick: To protect others, refrain from attending work, school, or public gatherings if you’re feeling unwell.
  • Consider Masking: If you are at higher risk, consider wearing a tight-fitting mask in crowded indoor settings.

Understanding Risks and Planning for Treatment

High-risk individuals, such as people aged 65 and older, those with compromised immune systems, pregnant individuals, and those living or working in congregate settings, are advised to take extra precautions and plan ahead. Knowing when to seek medical care and discussing antiviral treatment options with healthcare providers can be critical in managing symptoms effectively.

Monitoring and Outreach

The HNHU’s Infectious Disease and Vaccine Preventable Disease teams closely monitor local trends in respiratory virus cases and outbreaks. Surveillance data is being used to guide targeted public health efforts, including a seasonal public awareness campaign focusing on protective measures, vaccination, and community education. Surveillance data is available to the public through the Respiratory Dashboard.
