Available Vaccines

• Pfizer and Moderna monovalent vaccines (Primary series for infants, children and adults. Formulation and recommendation based on current guidance)
• Pfizer bivalent vaccine (booster for those 5-11 years old and those aged 12+. Formulation and recommendation based on current guidance).
• Moderna BA. 4/5 bivalent vaccines (booster dose for those aged 18+)
• Moderna BA. 1 bivalent vaccine (booster dose for those aged 6+)
• Novavax Vaccine (Primary series or booster dose for those aged 12+)
• Janssen Vaccine (Primary series or booster dose for those aged 18+)

 

Staying Up to Date

• 6 months – 4 years: completion of the primary series. This age group is not eligible for a booster dose at this time.
• 5 years and older: completion of the primary series and receipt of a booster dose (monovalent or bivalent). Individuals who have not received a booster dose since September 1, 2022 are recommended to receive one if it has been at least six months (168 days) since their last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection. If a booster dose has been received on or after September 1, 2022, there is no current evidence that supports the need for an additional dose. Recommendations for future doses will be issued closer to Fall 2023.
• High-risk populations: completion of the primary series and receipt of a booster dose (either monovalent or bivalent). High-risk populations are recommended to receive a spring booster dose if at least six months (168 days) have passed since their last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection. High-Risk populations include:
  • 65 years and older.
  • Residents of long-term care homes, retirement homes, elder care lodges, and other congregate living settings for seniors.
  • Individuals 18 years and older living in congregate care settings for people with complex medical care needs.
  • Pregnant individuals.
  • Individuals 18 years and older are moderately to severely immunocompromised.
  • Individuals aged 55 years and older who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Metis and their non-Indigenous household members aged 55 years and older.

 

In Ontario, individuals outside of the above groups may opt to receive another booster dose during the Spring of 2023, if at least six months (168 days) have passed since their previous dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection. However, there is no current evidence that supports the need for an additional dose if a booster was already received on or after September 1, 2022.

For all age groups, evidence shows that the antibody response is higher with longer intervals between infection and vaccination and with longer intervals between vaccination doses.

• NACI states that any of the bivalent Omicron-containing mRNA boosters are preferred over the original formulation boosters for authorized age groups (18 years of age and older for Moderna bivalent vaccine, 12 years of age and older for Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent vaccine, and five-to-11 years of age for Pfizer-BioNTech Pediatric Bivalent vaccine).
