Community Vaccine Update for March 22, 2023 

Statistics for residents  

Vaccine doses administered to date: 284,408 

  • Pediatric doses to date: 4,652 (Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit administered only)
  • Infant doses to date: 114 (Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit administered only)
  • Proportion of local population 6 months + with at least 1 dose:  75.5%
  • Proportion of local population 6 months + with 2 doses: 73.3%

Vaccine Eligibility 

  • Health Canada has authorized the use of Pfizer pediatric bivalent vaccine. This product is available as a booster dose for children aged five to 11 years old.  
  • Health Canada has authorized the use of Pfizer bivalent vaccine. This product is available as a booster dose for everyone 12+.
  • Health Canada authorized the use of Pfizer pediatric vaccine for infants aged six months to five years.  
  • Health Canada authorized the use of Moderna bivalent vaccine, BA. 4/5. This product is now available as a booster dose for everyone 18+. 
  • Health Canada authorized the use of Moderna bivalent vaccine, BA.1, This product is available as a booster dose for everyone 6+ years of age. 
  • Health Canada has authorized the use of a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for individuals aged six months to five years old.  
  • Health Canada has authorized the use of Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine for individuals 18+ years old both as a primary series and booster dose. 
  • Health Canada has authorized the use of Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine for individuals 12+ years old as a primary series.  
  • Individuals who are five years of age and older are eligible for booster doses.  Booster doses for these groups are recommended at an interval of six months (168 days) after the previous dose but can be received at a minimum interval of three months (84 days). 
  • Moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals aged 12+ who received a three-dose primary series are eligible for a booster dose. Booster doses for these groups are recommended at an interval of six months. Doses can be received at a minimum interval of three months. 
  • If you have recently had COVID-19 you are still eligible for a primary series or booster dose of the vaccine. Residents should wait until they are out of isolation and symptoms have resolved to receive their next dose. The NACI recommendation for the COVID-19 vaccine after COVID-19 infection is to wait up to three months after infection to receive the next dose.

  • The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit continues to remind residents that being up to date on COVID-19 vaccines is the most effective way to protect yourself from severe COVID-19 infection and hospitalization, including infection with the Omicron variant.  
  • NACI recommends that COVID-19 vaccinations should be offered to children five-to-11 years of age. 
  • NACI recommends that COVID-19 vaccinations may be offered to children six months to five years of age.  
  • NACI states that any of the bivalent Omicron-containing mRNA boosters are preferred over the original formulation boosters for authorized age groups (18 years of age and older for Moderna bivalent vaccine, 12 years of age and older for Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent vaccine, and five-to-11 years of age for Pfizer-BioNTech Pediatric Bivalent vaccine).
