SIMCOE, ON, OCT. 8, 2008 – Eight local restaurants have received the prestigious Eat Smart Award of Excellence from the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.

The annual awards, open to all restaurants in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties, were announced last week at a special ceremony.

“This award program recognizes high standards in a number of areas, such as nutrition, safe food handling and a smoke-free environment,” explained Krysta Clark, Health Promoter for the Health Unit’s Healthy Environment team. “The program is an excellent way to recognize the hard work and dedication of these establishments, as well as signify to the public that these restaurants are truly excellent places to eat.”

This year’s winners are Barrel Pizza and Spaghetti House, Simcoe; The Blue Elephant, Simcoe; The Coffee Shop, Port Dover; Murphy’s Diner, Port Dover; Rossi’s Place, Port Dover; Serafina, Simcoe; Swiss Chalet, Simcoe; and Zellers Family Restaurant, Simcoe.

“This was a record breaking year for the Health Unit’s Eat Smart program with a total of 18 establishments applying for the award,” Clark said.

Winners received a special certificate to be displayed in their establishment; along with a variety of materials to promote their Eat Smart success to customers.

The winners will also be featured on the Eat Smart website at http://www.eatrightontario.ca/ as well as the Food Inc. website at www.foodinc.ca.

“Eat Smart is a yearly award and the Health Unit is already taking applications for the 2009/2010 award,” Clark said.
