Enfamil brand Nutramigen A+ LGG Hypoallergenic (infant formula) recalled

The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit (HNHU) shares the recall announcement of Enfamil product Nutramigen A+ LGG hypoallergenic infant formula in either the 561 gram containers or a pack of four.

UPC codes are 0 56796 004982 or 0 56796 0044985

To date, there have been no reported illnesses associated with this recall.

The HNHU has contacted local healthcare providers to ensure they have accurate information to share with their clients.

Food contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause sickness. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) states that although Cronobacter is rare and is not commonly linked to human illness, infections from this pathogen in infants can be serious or even fatal, causing rare bloodstream and central nervous system infections, and has been associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), especially in newborns.

Symptoms

Symptoms in infants (less than one-year-old) infected with Cronobacter include fever, very low energy, difficulty feeding, seizures and excessive crying. Infants may also experience inflammation around the brain and spinal cord that can be life-threatening.

In patients of all ages, including infants, Cronobacter infections may have symptoms such as urinary tract infections or wound infections (in cuts or surgical incisions).

Health Canada states that the infection can be especially dangerous for babies under 2 months, premature babies and babies with weakened immune systems.

What you should do

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises:

  • If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider,
  • Check to see if you have recalled products,
  • Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
