Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit confirms first death related to COVID-19
The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit has been notified of the first death related to COVID-19 within its jurisdiction. The individual, formerly a resident at an area retirement home, died at the West Haldimand General Hospital yesterday.
Furthermore, the Health Unit was advised this evening that there are additional individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. As such, five people in total have now tested positive for COVID-19 in Haldimand County and Norfolk County.
The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit has initiated a public health management plan. This includes placing all the residents of the affected institution in isolation, as well as initiating a case management program. Close contacts will be managed by the Health Unit.
“I’m saddened to learn of this loss of life due to COVID-19,” says Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Medical Officer of Health. “This underscores the importance of continued vigilance in the face of this virus, and the necessity of assertive actions such as self-isolation and social distancing.”
