Memorial walk for well-respected health promoter

Sept. 24 – Michele Crowley was not only a well-respected member of the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit as a health promoter but also a leader of Norfolk Pathways for People (P4P).

As coordinator of the group since its inception in 2007, Crowley is fondly remembered by Norfolk’s walking and cycling communities for bringing enthusiasm and motivation to all issues. Along with her husband Rob Luke and dog Normandale, Crowley took pleasure in walking and riding the Norfolk pathways she helped to enhance.

In February, Crowley lost a battle with cancer, she was 47. In the days and weeks afterwards, Pathways for People – which is supported by the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit – have organized a memorial walk that will take place in Simcoe on Sept. 29. Walkers can meet at Simcoe Lions Park at 2 p.m. and enjoy a stroll on the Norfolk Sunrise Trail.  The event is free.

Earlier this year, donations to the LVTA in memory of Crowley enabled the purchase of a memorial bench and plaque located alongside the Lynn Valley Trail. A short dedication of the bench and plaque will be led by P4P members before the walk Sept. 29.

“She always had a big smile on her face, fearlessly led trail walks (in any weather), and had the best sense of humour with a contagious laugh,” said Michelle Lyne, Program Manager at the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.

Added Luke, also a member of P4P, “Michele will be missed by her friends, family, professional colleagues and the entire community as she was a person who made a difference in all who came in contact with her.”

P4P is a community coalition that advocates for the development and improvement of connected trails and pathways in Norfolk County. The group also promotes the regular use of trails, sidewalks, and roadways for health, recreation and active transportation. They host two trail events per year to introduce the public to Norfolk’s extensive trail system.
