New Health Unit website eases search for reliable, local health information

SIMCOE, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 – Finding answers to a wide range of health-related questions will now be easier for Haldimand and Norfolk residents.
After months of planning, designing and construction, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit unveiled its revamped website today. Parents, seniors, students, health care providers, new mothers, educators and residents of Haldimand and Norfolk Counties will now be able to more easily find accurate and reliable health information.

The redesigned Health Unit site includes much more than just a cosmetic makeover. The website, still found at hnhu.org, has been reorganized to improve the functionality and experience for all types of users. A more robust search engine was also added to make searching for desired information much easier than the previous version. The new site also meets the provincial accessibility requirements.

As laptops, tablets and smartphones continue to rise in popularity; people have become accustomed to being able to access information with only a few keyboard strokes or a taps on a screen. The refreshed site will cater to these web users through a responsive design, which allows content to be displayed optimally on whatever device the website is being accessed from.

“People access the internet for all kinds of health information and we, as a public health organization, need to ensure local residents are receiving accurate information about a variety of health issues, and in a user-friendly manner,” said Jill Steen, Manager of the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.
In addition to more than one thousand individual pages of health information written and reviewed by Health Unit staff, the new site also includes features such as online immunization reporting, access to tick submission results, an area specifically for health care professionals, and integration with the Health Unit’s social media channels.

“In a largely rural area like Haldimand and Norfolk Counties, transportation can be a challenge for people trying to get to a Health Unit office, so having easy access to health information and services online is an important service to the public we serve,” added Steen.

The site was designed in conjunction with Carbonated Incorporated.
