Poverty challenge particpants reflect on hunger pains and lessons learned

Poverty challenge particpants reflect on hunger pains and lessons learned

CALEDONIA, NOVEMBER 22, 2010

WHAT:A wrap-up and debriefing session with the particpants of the “Do the Math”poverty challenge, who lived for five days on only the contents of a standard food hamper.

WHO:The challenge was organized by the poverty forum planning committee. Challenge participants included: Lorraine Bergstrand and Dave McLean of the Haldimand-Norfolk Literacy Council, Norfolk County councillor and Shelter Program Manager at Haldimand and Norfolk Women’s Services Heidy Van Dyk, Haldimand County’s General Manager of Community Services Hugh Hanly, O.P.P. Detachment Commanders John Periversoff and Zvonko Horvat, Norfolk County’s General Manager of Planning and Economic Development Chris Baird, President of the Haldimand-Norfolk New Democrat Party Ian Nichols, Patti Moore, General Manager of Norfolk County Health & Social Services, Coordinator of the Lake Erie Steelworkers Action Centre Shannon Horner-Shepherd, Reverend Tim Dobbin from Simcoe’s Trinity Anglican Church, John Moore, teacher at Simcoe Composite School and Tina Gates, Constituency Assistant for the office of M.P.P Toby Barrett.

The debrief session will be facilitated by Mike Balkwill, provincial coordinator for the Put Food in the Budget campaign and Coraine Wray, Public Health Dietitian with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.
Challenge particpants and organizers will be available for interview at the beginning of the debrief session.

WHEN:The debrief session will take place on Friday, November 26, 2010 from 10:00 am to noon
WHERE: Haldimand County Caledonia Centre (new arena) in the Remax Room – 100 Haddington St., Caledonia.

WHY:The meeting is a chance for the thirteen challenge participants from our local “Do the Math” campaign to discuss their experiences, challenges and lessons learned from their particpation in the challenge.
