Public Health Agency of Canada funds youth substance use prevention initiative in Haldimand and Norfolk

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has awarded $704,886over three years to support the rollout of the Icelandic Prevention Model, known as Planet Youth, in Haldimand and Norfolk counties. This evidence-based approach focuses on strengthening protective factors in young people’s lives and reducing risks associated with substance use.

With this investment, Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) will continue working with local partners to develop a long-term, community-driven prevention plan. A multi-sector coalition representing school boards, municipal partners, health and social services, and community organizations is already meeting regularly to guide implementation.

In collaboration with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board and the Grand Erie District School Board, all Grade 10 students across Haldimand and Norfolk will be invited to participate in an anonymous survey in December 2025. The survey collects information about students’ experiences at home, at school, with friends, during free time, and in their communities. No identifying information will be gathered.

Survey results will help partners understand the current needs and strengths of local youth and inform next steps in the prevention plan. Findings will be shared publicly in early 2026 and will support ongoing efforts to create positive relationships, safe activities, and supportive home and school environments for young people.

The coalition encourages youth, parents, caregivers, educators, and community members to stay engaged as this important work moves forward. Anyone interested in learning more or getting involved locally is encouraged to visit www.planetyouthhaldimandnorfolk.ca.

Quote:

“This investment gives our community a powerful opportunity to better understand the realities young people are navigating today. With strong partnerships and solid, local data, we can build supports that genuinely reflect what youth need to feel safe, empowered, and able to thrive. I’m grateful to all the partners who are stepping up to make this work possible, and I’m excited for what this will mean for young people in Haldimand and Norfolk.”
