Shoppers wanted in support of G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp
SIMCOE, MAY 25, 2012 – A new fundraiser to support a local camp for teenage girls is offering the guilt-free shopping experience many women long for.
Women and teens are being invited to the Travelodge in Simcoe on Saturday, June 2nd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to peruse a vast selection of gently-used brand name clothing, footwear, jewellery and accessories. Shoppers will be asked to pay a $2 admission fee and most merchandise will sell for $2, $5 and $10. New merchandise that has been donated by local businesses will also be raffled off.
All proceeds from the sale will go directly to G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp, a program where local Grade 8 girls come together to discuss and learn about topics such as self-esteem, body image, healthy relationships, leadership, healthy eating, physical activity and personal safety. The camp also addresses the often challenging transition into Grade 9.
“We are relying heavily on this fundraiser to keep the camp program running,” said Michele Crowley, Health Promoter from the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit. “The support we have had so far has been unbelievable. The community knows about our program and they are really pitching in to keep it afloat.”
Cindy Vanderstar, owner of Cashmere & Cobwebs in Port Rowan, first brought the idea for the shopping fundraiser forward.
“I wanted to come up with a fundraiser that could tie my store and its fashions to helping our women of tomorrow,” explained Vanderstar. “Choosing G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp made sense. I can help a program that empowers our young girls while also dressing all of the lovely ladies of the Norfolk & Haldimand areas. It’s a win-win all around.”
As word of the sale was spreading through the community, a local law firm stepped forward with a promise to match the proceeds from the event.
“We are proud to support a program that promotes independence and self-esteem amongst female students and encourages young girls to become strong women,” says Corina Bachmann of Bachmann Personal Injury Law. “We believe that strong and healthy women are the foundation of a strong and healthy society and are excited to be part of this endeavor.”
The Travelodge, located at 385 Queensway West, has graciously donated space for the sale.
“The quantity and quality of clothing donations, along with the financial contributions, have actually been a bit overwhelming.” added Crowley. “Shoppers are definitely going to stumble upon some fabulous finds.”
Sale organizers want to let shoppers know that this is a cash only event, and all sales are final.
The G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp program, which has been operating annually since 2000, is a joint venture of Haldimand and Norfolk Women’s Services, Haldimand-Norfolk REACH and the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.
