Statement from Medical Officer of Health re: Keeping seniors safe

March 19, 2020, Simcoe, ON – Haldimand-Norfolk Medical Officer of Health Shanker Nesathurai has issued the following statement regarding helping seniors obtain groceries and supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic:

“Seniors are among the most vulnerable to serious complications arising from COVID-19 infection. That’s why I – along with public health officials across Ontario – am asking them to stay home as much as possible and to avoid close contact with others.

Ensuring seniors continue to have access to food and other necessities is of utmost importance. I encourage them to take advantage of the food delivery services provided by some grocery stores.

If this isn’t a feasible option, I ask that family members and neighbours make themselves available to assist in the delivery of supplies.

Should seniors find it necessary to visit a grocery or other store during a “seniors hour”, they should be sure to do the following:

  • Stay at least six feet away from other shoppers
  • Wipe down shopping cart or basket handles before use
  • Avoid repeat trips

Yesterday I spoke with a group of local clergy who I called on to make alternate worship services, and encouraged them to reach out to seniors in their congregations to provide various kinds of support.

I’m confident that, by taking these measures, local seniors will be able to protect themselves against the spread of COVID-19.”
