Workplaces urged to take healthy “challenge”

SIMCOE, ON, SEPT. 26, 2008 – The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit is encouraging area workplaces to take part in Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month.

The four-week long celebration and promotion of healthy workplaces runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 26 and features weekly challenges that can be accessed at website www.healthyworkplacemonth.ca.

“Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month promotes fostering a workplace culture of trust and respect where people are happy and healthy at work,” explained Health Unit Workplace Health Promoter Erin Bellchamber. “In a healthy workplace, people want to come to work. During the month of October, every employer is encouraged to take extra time to recognize employees and show them how vital they are to the success of their organization.”

The theme for 2008 is, Take the Healthy Workplace Challenge. Each week, workplaces are challenged to participate in a specific activity, and winners are announced by the Canadian Healthy Workplace Council. Local businesses and organizations can participate in some or all of the activities by registering at the website.

“We’re encouraging local workplaces to take up the challenge,” Bellchamber said. “It’s good for morale and it’s good for productivity.”

The challenges are as follows:

Week 1: Healthy Habits – Fit at Work Challenge
Challenge your employees to increase their physical activity level.

Week 2: Healthy Culture at Work – Support at Work Challenge
Assess your workplace culture.

Week 3: Your Physical Environment – Green at Work Challenge
How environmentally friendly is your organization?

Week 4: Keep it going All Year Round – Champions at Work
Keep the momentum going; submit an event or share your story!

The website provides practical tools and ideas to help organizations participate. It also provides case studies and long-term strategies for organizations seeking a comprehensive approach to organizational health.
