Walkers getting powered up to support local G.I.R.L.S. camp
SIMCOE, OCTOBER 4, 2010 – Walkers will be lacing up their shoes in support of the Haldimand-Norfolk G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp program on Saturday, October 23rd. The first annual Power Walk for G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp will be held at Wellington Park in Simcoe from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
All money raised at the walk will go directly to programming for G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp, a unique weekend camp experience for local grade eight girls. Led by female volunteers between the ages of 16 and 27, the camp focuses on healthy choices, body image, self-esteem, healthy eating and active living, healthy relationships, personal safety and helping the girls successfully transition into grade nine.
Camp organizers from Haldimand-Norfolk REACH, Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services and the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit are looking forward to seeing past campers, facilitators and parents at the walk.
“We have met a lot of amazing campers and facilitators over the last ten years,” said Constance Harvey, Group Program Coordinator with Haldimand-Norfolk REACH. “They know first-hand how valuable this program is, and we encourage them to help raise funds to keep it going.”
Walkers are encouraged to raise a minimum of $50 in donations, and participants will receive a free t-shirt with their $10 registration fee.
“We have lots of fun stuff planned for Power Walk participants,” said Jens Lados, STAR Counsellor from Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services. “In addition to the walk through Wellington Park, we are going to have some live music, Zumba dancing, Kid Fit Cardio⢠and empowerment activities.”
Everybody is welcome to participate in the Power Walk. Registration packages are available by contacting Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services at 519-426-8048 or by visiting Haldimand-Norfolk REACH at 101 Nanticoke Creek Parkway, Townsend or at the Haldimand – Norfolk Health Unit at 12 Gilbertson Drive, Simcoe.
Donations will also be accepted on October 23rd at Wellington Park. Donations of $20 or more are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. To learn more about G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp visit:hngirlspowercamp.com.
