(Update) Hepatitis A Vaccine Clinics Offered Due to Costco Frozen Fruit Recall

Simcoe, ON – April 21st, 2016 – The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit encourages residents with questions or concerns about the frozen fruit recall from Costco to visit the health unit website at www.hnhu.org.  If there are further questions, please contact the health unit at 519-426-6170 Ext. 3214

On April 15, 2016, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall for Nature’s Touch Berry Cherry blend due to possible Hepatitis A contamination. The product is exclusively sold at Costco locations. The CFIA has encouraged the public to check to see if they have the product in their home and to either throw it out or return it to the place of purchase. If the product has been consumed or individuals show symptoms, it is recommended they contact their health care provider.

“Hepatitis A infections can affect anyone, although young, elderly and those with a compromised immune system may be more susceptible,” says Stacey Guthrie, Infection Control Practitioner at the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit. “Symptoms vary but can include fever, nausea/vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea and jaundice. Symptoms are often mild and usually last one to two weeks.”

Guthrie reminds everyone that hand hygiene is the most effective preventative measure against any communicable disease.

If you have consumed the product within the last 14 days, are asymptomatic and have not had a Hepatitis A vaccine in the past, you may wish to attend one of the post exposure prophylaxis clinics being offered by the health unit.
