Health Canada has authorized the use of Comirnaty (the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine) in children 5 to 11 years of age. The Pfizer formulation (which is the only vaccine currently approved for this age group) is 10 MCG instead of 30 MCG, so it is a lower dose than the formulation for adults. The liquid that it is mixed in is also slightly different. Visit the Health Canada website to learn more.

NACI recommends that children receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before or after any other non-COVID-19 vaccine. This is a precaution to help to determine if a side effect that may arise is due to the COVID-19 vaccine or another vaccine. There may be circumstances when a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and another vaccine need to be given at the same time. A healthcare provider can help with this decision.

The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit understands that some children may be anxious and have a fear of needles. Clinic staff understand and are trained to help you and your child have a comfortable experience. Children can bring items that may provide them comfort (iPad, music, stuffed animals, etc.).

Consent by a parent or guardian will be required for COVID-19 vaccination for children aged five to 11. Children will NOT be vaccinated without a parent or legal guardian present. All clinic appointment times for children have been extended to provide children and parents more time to ask questions.
