Haldimand-Norfolk Board of Health appoints Dr. Alex Hukowich as Interim Acting Medical Officer of Health

The Haldimand-Norfolk Board of Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alex Hukowich as Interim Acting Medical Officer of Health commencing Friday, May 21, 2021.

Dr. Hukowich’s appointment coincides with the departure of Dr. Shanker Nesathurai who has served as the district’s Medical Officer of Health since October 2018. Dr. Hukowich will support the Health Unit and Board of Health until an Acting Medical Officer of Health is recruited.

Dr. Hukowich is a retired Medical Officer of Health with many years of public health experience in rural areas of Ontario, including Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, Muskoka Health Unit and Algoma Public Health.

Until an Acting Medical Officer of Health is recruited, Dr. Hukowich will work to provide continued oversight and management of the pandemic and associated programs in Haldimand and Norfolk counties.

The Board of Health is pleased with the recruitment of Dr. Hukowich as this means that both Haldimand and Norfolk counties will continue to have an experienced Medical Officer of Health during this critical time.

The Chair of the Board of Health Kristal Chopp expressed her thanks to Dr. Hukowich for coming forward to help the community, and to the Ministry of Health for providing recruitment support.

The Board of Health is required to engage with Haldimand County in the hiring of a Medical Officer of Health and a sub-committee has been established. Staff have shortlisted a number highly qualified candidates that will be interviewed by the sub-committee and the Board of Health.

The Board of Health is hopeful to make an announcement regarding an Acting Medical Officer of Health in the very near future.
