Support available for those who lose a baby during pregnancy

SIMCOE, JANUARY 20, 2012 – The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit is offering a Perinatal Bereavement Support Program for family members who have experienced a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy loss, stillborn, neonatal or infant death.

The loss of a baby during a pregnancy can lead to waves of grief that can continue to hit individuals months, or even years, later. The Health Unit is providing a safe and supportive environment dedicated to awareness and offering support through the sharing of stories on grief, loss and hope.

“Any loss during any stage of pregnancy is a significant loss,” noted Angela Swick, Public Health Nurse with the Health Unit. “It can affect relationships, employment, future pregnancy plans, parenting, as well as physical and mental health.”

The support group meets the second Monday of every month from 6-8 p.m. at the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit in Simcoe, located at 12 Gilbertson Drive. The group is free and no referral is required.
