Needle Syringe Program
The Needle Syringe Program is part of the harm reduction services provided by the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit (HNHU). All services are free and confidential.
What is the purpose of a needle syringe program?
Needle syringe programs help to reduce the spread of HIV and other blood-borne illnesses, such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C among intravenous drugs and steroid injection users by providing sterile needles and drug-using supplies.
How do needle syringe programs make a difference in our community?
- Needle syringe programs help by reducing many risk-related practices of injection drug users such as reusing and sharing needles.
- The program is also important because it reduces the unsafe disposal of needles in the community (e.g. playgrounds or washrooms) and reduces the spread of blood-borne infections.
This is a service offered by the HNHU. This program helps to reduce the spread of HIV and other blood-borne illnesses by providing the following items and services free and confidentially:
- Free needles (short or long lengths)
- Alcohol swabs, cookers, filters, sterile water, tourniquets and vitamin C packets
- Sharps containers to safely store used needles
- Used sharps disposal
- Naloxone training and kits (opioid overdose medication)
- HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing
- Condoms and personal lubricant
- Hepatitis A and B vaccinations
- Information on safer drug-using practices
- HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis education
- Counselling and treatment referrals
